**Glera** is a white grape from north-eastern Italy, grown across the Veneto and Friuli, and it is the variety behind Prosecco. The grape was in fact renamed Glera so that "Prosecco" could be protected as a place-based name rather than a grape name. **In the glass** — light, crisp and fragrant, with delicate aromas of green apple, pear, white blossom and a touch of citrus, brisk acidity and a soft, frothy texture in sparkling form. It is charming and uncomplicated rather than deep. **Where it grows** — its home is the hills of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene and the surrounding plains of the Veneto and Friuli, where it is chiefly made into sparkling wine by the tank method. Small amounts of still and lightly fizzy wine are also produced. **At the table** — a lovely aperitif, and good with light antipasti, seafood or fresh fruit. **Cellaring** — best enjoyed young and fresh, ideally within a year or two of release.
