Nerello Mascalese

**Nerello Mascalese** is a red grape from Sicily, most celebrated on the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna. It has become one of Italy's most sought-after varieties for its elegance and sense of place. **In the glass** — it shows a pale to medium ruby colour and aromas of red cherry, dried herbs, orange peel and a smoky, mineral edge. The palate is refined and structured, with firm tannins, high acidity and a graceful, almost Burgundian or Nebbiolo-like poise. **Where it grows** — its spiritual home is Etna, where high-altitude vineyards on mineral-rich volcanic soils and old vines produce Etna Rosso, often blended with a little Nerello Cappuccio. Site and elevation strongly shape its expression. **At the table** — enjoy with roasted meats, mushroom dishes, or aged cheeses. **Cellaring** — the best examples are genuinely age-worthy, evolving over a decade or more toward savoury, tertiary complexity.
