Etna Rosso Calderara Sottana

Tasting profile

Structure: medium-bodied, high tannin, high acidity, dry

Calderara Sottana is one of Tenuta delle Terre Nere's single-contrada Etna Rossos: Nerello Mascalese from 50- to 100-year-old vines at 600-700 metres near Randazzo on Etna's north slope, on ground so covered in black pumice and basalt that the stones store the day's heat (the name's origin). Aged about fourteen months in barrique and tonneaux. Red cherry, raspberry and blood orange over herbs, pepper and a smoky, volcanic mineral note; the most structured and tannic of the estate's crus, with high acidity and a long, savoury finish.
