Barolo DOCG permits only Nebbiolo and requires a minimum of three years' ageing before release, two of them in wood — which means a great deal is knowable about any Barolo even where the producing estate is not disclosed, as with a private-label bottling. Nebbiolo looks deceptively pale, a brick-tinged garnet rather than deep red, then delivers substantial tannin and acidity. Dried cherry and red plum with rose petal, tar, licorice, leather and dried herb. Full-bodied but not heavy, with a long, dry, savoury finish. Austere young and slow to open; decanting helps considerably.
