Tasting profile

Structure: medium-bodied, medium tannin, medium acidity, dry

Bordeaux Supérieur covers exactly the same geographical territory as the generic Bordeaux appellation but imposes stricter rules: lower yields, a higher minimum ripeness at harvest, and a compulsory period of ageing before release. It is therefore a quality step rather than a place, and the wines come mostly from the outlying areas and the right bank rather than the classified Médoc communes. Merlot leads, with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Expect plum and blackcurrant with cedar, a graphite edge and a savoury, earthy finish, medium-bodied with moderate tannins — readier and less austere than a Médoc of the same age, and made to be drunk within five to ten years rather than cellared at length.
