Italy

**Italy** is one of the world's largest and most diverse wine producers, with grapevines grown in every one of its regions from the Alps to Sicily. Its great strength is an astonishing library of native grape varieties, giving it a range of flavours and styles matched by few other countries. **Signature wines** — Sangiovese-based reds like Chianti and Brunello, the powerful Nebbiolo of Barolo and Barbaresco, juicy Montepulciano and rich Primitivo in the south, plus sparkling Prosecco (Glera) and countless distinctive whites. **Key regions** — Tuscany, Piedmont, the Veneto, and further afield Sicily, Puglia, Campania, Friuli, and Trentino-Alto Adige. **Good to know** — Italy's quality tiers run from IGT up through DOC to the top DOCG designation, though some of its most celebrated wines, the so-called Super Tuscans, deliberately sat outside the traditional rules when they first appeared. With hundreds of indigenous varieties still in commercial use, Italy offers more genuine diversity than almost anywhere else.
