Nebbiolo

**Nebbiolo** is a red grape from Italy's Piedmont, the noble variety behind Barolo and Barbaresco and one of the world's great age-worthy wines. Its name likely evokes the autumn fog (nebbia) that blankets the Langhe hills at harvest. **In the glass** — deceptively pale and garnet-hued, yet powerful, with haunting aromas of rose petal, tar, dried cherry, truffle and dried herbs. It combines fierce, drying tannins with searing acidity in a medium body, a hallmark tension that rewards patience. **Where it grows** — Barolo is fuller and more structured, Barbaresco a touch more perfumed and elegant. It also appears in Gattinara, Ghemme and the Valtellina, but rarely succeeds far from its Piedmontese home. **At the table** — made for truffle dishes, braised beef and rich risottos. **Cellaring** — one of the longest-lived reds; the best Barolo needs a decade to soften and can last for decades.
