This is Barolo from Serralunga d'Alba, and the commune matters more than almost anything else on the label. Serralunga sits on the eastern side of the Barolo zone, on the oldest, poorest and most calcareous soils, and gives the most powerful, tannic and slowest-maturing wines in the appellation, the opposite pole from La Morra's perfume. Fontanafredda is one of the historic estates there, founded in the 1850s on land given by Victor Emmanuel II, first king of a united Italy, to his mistress. It is Nebbiolo in its classic register: pale garnet turning orange at the rim, with dried rose, red cherry, tar, leather, tobacco and an iron-like savour, full-bodied, with searing acidity and abundant drying tannin. Austere and closed when young, it needs a decade and rewards two. Decant it at length and serve it with a substantial dish.
