Gaja's Barbaresco is the estate's calling card: a blend drawn from more than a dozen parcels across the commune of Barbaresco, all Nebbiolo, raised in a mix of French barrique and large Slavonian cask. It is pale garnet and deceptively light-looking for a wine of this grip — dried rose and sour cherry on the nose, then tar, tobacco and orange peel, carried on the high acidity and fine, insistent tannins that define the grape. Angelo Gaja's house style favours polish and precision over rusticity, but this is emphatically a wine for the table and for the cellar; it needs a decade before the tannins unwind and rewards two or three more.
