Barbaresco — Nebbiolo from the hills east of Alba, and the more approachable of Piedmont's two great appellations. Shorter mandatory ageing and slightly warmer, earlier-ripening sites give a wine with Barolo's aromatics but a lighter frame: rose, red cherry and raspberry over tar, sweet tobacco and dried herb, medium-bodied with the same high acidity and firm drying tannin. It opens earlier than Barolo and needs less patience, without giving up the perfume that makes Nebbiolo worth the trouble.
