Tasting profile

Structure: full-bodied, high acidity, dry

Gaia & Rey is Gaja's flagship Chardonnay, first made in 1983 and named for Angelo Gaja's daughter Gaia and his grandmother Clotilde Rey. The fruit comes from a high plot at Treiso planted in 1979 and a Serralunga d'Alba site that adds acidity, and the wine is fermented and raised in barrique. Rich yet taut: yellow apple, lemon curd and white peach with hazelnut, brioche and a flinty, mineral finish. One of Italy's most age-worthy whites, it builds depth and nutty complexity over a decade or more.

Serving: Serve at 10–12 °C.
