Blaufränkisch

**Blaufränkisch** is a red grape most associated with Austria, especially the Burgenland region, and is also widely grown across Central Europe, where it goes by names such as Lemberger in Germany and Kékfrankos in Hungary. **In the glass** — It is medium to full-bodied with a deep colour, showing dark cherry and blackberry fruit alongside a distinctive spicy, peppery character and often an earthy, mineral edge. Bright acidity and firm tannins give it real structure. **Where it grows** — Burgenland is its heartland, but it flourishes throughout Hungary, Germany and neighbouring countries, ranging from juicy, fruit-forward styles to serious, oak-aged, age-worthy reds. **At the table** — Its acidity and spice pair well with roast pork, game and paprika-spiced dishes. **Cellaring** — Structured examples can develop beautifully over five to ten years or more, while lighter versions are enjoyable young.
