Aglianico

**Aglianico** is a noble red grape of southern Italy, centred on the regions of Campania and Basilicata, and often called the "Barolo of the south" for its power and longevity. It is an ancient variety of the volcanic hills of the Mezzogiorno. **In the glass** — deeply coloured and formidably structured, it offers dark plum and black cherry, tar, leather, dried herbs and smoke, with high acidity and firm, grippy tannins that demand time to soften. **Where it grows** — its two great expressions are Taurasi in Campania and Aglianico del Vulture in Basilicata, both grown on volcanic soils; it is also planted across Puglia, Molise and increasingly in the New World. **At the table** — superb with braised and roasted red meats, game and aged hard cheeses. **Cellaring** — one of Italy's most age-worthy reds, the best examples need years to open and can develop for two decades or more.
