Aglianico from Irpinia Campi Taurasini — worth understanding, because the designation places the wine precisely. It covers Aglianico grown in the same volcanic hills as Taurasi, but without Taurasi DOCG's long mandatory ageing, so it is released younger and more approachably. Taurasi's terroir at a lower tier, not lesser fruit. The winery sits at Paternopoli on the volcanic slopes, and the name is literal: the ruined Hermitage of San Quirico stands on the site where wild horses once grazed, which is what the label painting shows. 100% Aglianico, eighteen months in new French oak. Dark cherry and blackberry with dried herbs, leather, black pepper and the iron-like mineral note volcanic soil gives. Full-bodied with the firm drying tannin and high acidity Aglianico always brings — southern Italy's answer to Nebbiolo, and the comparison is fair. Generous rather than austere for the variety, but it still wants food and air. Decant it. Braised lamb, slow-cooked pork, ragù, aged pecorino.
