From Rocky Point at the rugged southern end of Bendigo, which has some of the steepest slopes in Central Otago — the vineyard climbs from 226 to 351 metres on stony ground littered with broken schist that stores the day's heat and releases it overnight. The soils are so poor that parts had to be replanted to Riesling because Pinot Noir could not survive there, and that struggle is what gives the wine its energy. Hand-picked and destemmed with a high proportion of whole berries, wild fermented with just one pigeage across the whole vintage, seventeen months in French oak at 30% new, bottled unfined and unfiltered. Vibrant red and dark cherry with boysenberry and baking spice, dusty integrated tannins, and a long mineral finish. Brighter and crunchier than the Home Vineyard.
