Albe, meaning dawns, is named for the sunrises seen from Vajra's high vineyards above Vergne. The cuvée is assembled from three sites in La Morra and Barolo: Fossati, La Volta and Coste di Vergne. These are among the cooler, higher parcels in the zone, which is why this so-called entry-level Barolo tastes lifted rather than merely lighter. Vajra works in the traditional register, with long macerations, large old casks and no new-oak gloss. The wine is classic Nebbiolo: dried rose and sour cherry over tar and liquorice, with high acidity and a pale colour that belies the firm, full-bodied tannin behind it.
