Vaud

**Vaud** is a canton in western Switzerland and one of the country's most important wine regions, wrapped around the northern shore of Lake Geneva and the Rhône valley. **Wines & grapes** — White wine dominates, built almost entirely on Chasselas, which here gives dry, delicate, mineral wines. Reds and rosés come mainly from Pinot Noir and Gamay. **Character** — The famous Lavaux terraces, stone-walled vineyards tumbling down to the lake, benefit from a triple reflection of sunlight from sky, water and walls. The wines are typically light, fresh and food-friendly, prized locally and rarely exported in quantity. **Good to know** — Chasselas from Vaud is often bottled by village, such as Dézaley or Épesses, each with its own reputation.
