The first wine of its kind in New Zealand, and one of the very few non-Pinot reds anyone makes in Central Otago: three northern Italian varieties — Dolcetto, Lagrein and Barbera — grown on the Terra Sancta estate on Felton Road at Bannockburn. It is deliberately non-vintage, blended across several harvests to build complexity rather than express a single year, and matured mostly in seasoned French casks with a little new French and American oak. Around 13%, bone dry, with the lively acidity these grapes bring from an alpine setting. Luminous ruby, with a dense and beguiling nose of cherry, currant and liquorice over spice, vanilla and sandalwood; fresh, fragrant and medium-bodied on the palate, savoury and supple, with youthful plummy fruit, well-integrated oak and real immediacy. The estate farms organically with hens, sheep and goats among the vines and no-till soils. Bottled under cork sealed in wax — put the corkscrew straight through it. Serve at 16°C.
