**Lagrein** is a red grape native to the far north of Italy, thriving in the alpine valleys of Alto Adige around Bolzano. A relative of Teroldego, it makes darkly coloured, characterful reds that stand apart from the region's lighter styles. **In the glass** — inky, deep purple, with aromas of blackberry, dark plum, violet and a note of cocoa or bitter chocolate. The palate is full-bodied and richly fruited, with firm tannins balanced by refreshing acidity and a faintly bitter finish. **Where it grows** — Alto Adige is its home, particularly the warmer valley floors near Bolzano, and it is also planted in small amounts in nearby Trentino. It is a regional specialty rarely found beyond this alpine corner. **At the table** — a fine match for venison, braised beef, grilled sausages and mountain cheeses. **Cellaring** — approachable young, the more structured bottlings reward several years in the cellar.
