Dolcetto

**Dolcetto** is a red grape from Piedmont in north-west Italy, valued as the region's everyday red alongside its more austere neighbours Barbera and Nebbiolo. Its name hints at "little sweet one," a reference to the grape rather than the wine, which is dry. **In the glass** — it is deeply coloured, with aromas of black cherry, plum, licorice and a dusting of almond bitterness on the finish. The palate is soft and fruity, with moderate to firm tannins, relatively low acidity and an approachable, rounded body. **Where it grows** — its heartland is Piedmont, with named zones such as Dolcetto d'Alba, Dogliani and Dolcetto di Diano d'Alba. It thrives in cooler, higher sites where the later-ripening Nebbiolo struggles. **At the table** — a friendly partner for pizza, cured meats, and everyday pasta. **Cellaring** — meant to be drunk young, within a few years, while its fruit is fresh.
