Vino Nobile di Montepulciano from Poliziano, one of the appellation's leading estates — and the name causes endless confusion, so it is worth stating plainly: this is a Sangiovese wine from the Tuscan town of Montepulciano, while Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is a completely different grape grown two hundred miles away. Locally the Sangiovese clone is called Prugnolo Gentile, usually with a little Merlot or Colorino to round the mid-palate. Sour cherry and dried violet with leather, tobacco and an earthy, iron-tinged depth. Medium-bodied with high acidity and firm, well-managed tannin. Poliziano work in a more polished register than the appellation's traditionalists, so this is approachable earlier without losing the Tuscan backbone. Built for the table — the acidity is what makes it work with tomato and fat. A short decant helps. Bistecca, wild boar ragù, roast lamb, aged pecorino.
