Sangiovese

**Sangiovese** is a red grape and the signature variety of Tuscany, the heart of Italy's most famous reds. On the island of Corsica it is known as Nielluccio. **In the glass** — medium ruby, sometimes with a garnet tinge, offering aromas of sour cherry, red plum, tomato leaf and dried herbs; the palate is savoury, with high acidity, firm and grippy tannin and medium body. **Where it grows** — it is the sole or dominant grape of Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, each expressing a different weight and structure, and it also features in Super Tuscan blends; beyond Italy it appears in California, Argentina and Australia. **At the table** — made for tomato-based pasta, pizza and grilled meats. **Cellaring** — top Brunello and Chianti Classico examples age gracefully for a decade or more.
