One of the most celebrated old vintages in Champagne's history: a 1928 Perrier-Jouët, from a season Sotheby's fine wine department has called the house's greatest. Nearly a century on, any surviving bottle will show deep amber colour and gentle, fading effervescence, with tertiary notes of dried apricot, toasted brioche, honey and walnut replacing all primary fruit — a museum-piece curiosity rather than a wine to expect classic freshness from, and entirely dependent on how the individual bottle has been stored.
