Tasting profile

Structure: medium-bodied, medium tannin, high acidity, dry

Melascone is Colombera & Garella's Alto Piemonte red sold as Vino Rosso: mostly Nebbiolo with Vespolina and Croatina and a little of the region's old field varieties, from vines on porphyry and glacial soils around Lessona and Masserano. Spontaneously fermented, each variety aged separately in used oak before blending and resting in concrete. Fresh and elegant rather than big: red cherry and raspberry, rose petal, Vespolina's black pepper, a flinty edge, supple tannin and bright acidity. An everyday window into the region that drinks well young and over a few years.
