**Languedoc-Roussillon** is a vast sweep of vineyards along France's southern Mediterranean coast, running from the Rhône toward the Spanish border, and is one of the largest wine-producing areas in the world. **Wines & grapes** — Reds and rosés dominate, built from the classic southern French grapes Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, and Carignan, often blended together. Whites come from Picpoul, Grenache Blanc, and others, and the region also makes distinctive fortified sweet wines (vins doux naturels) such as Banyuls and Muscat. **Character** — A sunny, dry Mediterranean climate yields warm, herby, generous wines carrying the scent of the local wild scrubland known as garrigue. **Good to know** — Long a source of everyday bulk wine, it now offers some of France's best value alongside ambitious appellations like Corbières, Minervois, and Pic Saint-Loup.
