Lagrein is Alto Adige's serious red and the opposite of Schiava in almost every respect: deeply coloured, structured and firmly tannic where Schiava is pale and light. DNA work has shown it to be a descendant of Teroldego and a relative of Syrah, which the peppery savoury edge rather bears out. It ripens best on the warm gravelly soils around Bolzano, at the valley floor rather than on the slopes the whites occupy. Expect dark plum and black cherry with violets, bitter chocolate and a distinctive sour-cherry acidity, full-bodied with grippy tannins and a faintly bitter finish that is characteristic rather than a fault. A Selezione bottling implies a stricter parcel selection and more oak.
