Clairette

**Clairette** is a white grape long grown in the south of France, including the southern Rhône and the wider Mediterranean coast. It is a traditional blending grape that has been part of the region's whites for centuries. **In the glass** — it offers a medium to full body with gentle aromas of white flowers, apple, fennel and a touch of citrus, sometimes a faintly bitter, herbal finish. Acidity is on the lower side, so it is often blended with fresher partners for balance. **Where it grows** — it appears across the southern Rhône, Languedoc and Provence, both in still white blends and in the historic sparkling wine Clairette de Die. It is prone to oxidation, which shapes how it is handled in the cellar. **At the table** — pairs nicely with Provençal vegetable dishes, grilled fish and herbed poultry. **Cellaring** — generally best enjoyed young while its delicate florals and freshness remain.
