Muga's flagship and one of the last Gran Reservas made the genuinely traditional way — twelve months in tank, three years in oak with rackings done by hand and candlelight, then three more years in bottle before it leaves Haro. It is Tempranillo-led with Garnacha, Graciano and Mazuelo, and only made in vintages the house considers worthy. The result is classical Rioja rather than the modern extracted style: dried strawberry and red plum turning to leather, sweet tobacco, cedar and a warm vanilla-and-clove note from long American and French oak, carried on bright acidity and fine, resolved tannin. Elegant and savoury rather than powerful, and remarkably long-lived.
