Grenache

**Grenache** is a red grape that originated in the Aragón region of Spain, where it is called Garnacha, and it is widely grown across the Mediterranean. It is also known as Cannonau in Sardinia and Garnacho. **In the glass** — typically pale to medium ruby, with aromas of ripe strawberry, red plum, white pepper and dried herbs; the palate is generous and warming, with high alcohol, soft tannin and medium acidity. **Where it grows** — it is the backbone of Southern Rhône blends such as Châteauneuf-du-Pape, thrives across Spain in Priorat and Rioja, and produces old-vine wines in Australia's Barossa and in Sardinia. **At the table** — a fine partner for grilled lamb, stews and roasted vegetables. **Cellaring** — often delicious young, but old-vine and blended examples can age well for many years.
