Carignan

**Carignan** is a red grape of Spanish origin, traced to Aragón, where it is known as Cariñena. Long grown for volume, old-vine plantings are now prized for concentration and character. **In the glass** — deeply coloured, with tart red and black berry fruit, dried herbs and a rustic, earthy edge. It is marked by high acidity and firm, sometimes rugged tannins, giving a robust medium-to-full body. **Where it grows** — it is widespread in southern France's Languedoc-Roussillon, where gnarled old vines yield some of its finest wines, and it plays a supporting role in many Mediterranean blends. In Spain it appears as Cariñena and in Sardinia as Carignano. It is also grown in Chile and California. **At the table** — good with grilled sausages, lamb and tomato-based stews. **Cellaring** — old-vine examples can age a decade, but most are best enjoyed within a few years.
