Red Mountain is Washington's smallest and warmest AVA, and its poor, high-pH soils and constant dry wind give unusually small berries — a low juice-to-skin ratio behind the appellation's reputation for the state's most tannic and ageworthy reds. Hedges Family Estate was founded in 1987 by Tom and Anne-Marie Hedges as a virtual winery whose first customer was Sweden's wine monopoly; they bought their Red Mountain land in 1989 and now farm about 120 acres across five blocks, entirely estate fruit, having pioneered biodynamics in eastern Washington with all five vineyards Demeter-certified by 2021. This is their estate blend, Cabernet Sauvignon-led with Merlot and small parts of Syrah, Cabernet Franc and Malbec, fermented in steel and fully barrel-aged. Black raspberry and fig with baking spice, cocoa, rosemary and vanilla over a whisper of white pepper. Full and lush but grippy and bright, in a house style favouring structure over Washington's more usual richness.
