Bolgheri Superiore from Antinori's estate on the Tuscan coast — the appellation that Sassicaia created almost single-handedly, and where Bordeaux varieties rather than Sangiovese are the rule. Bolgheri is a coastal amphitheatre facing the Tyrrhenian, with sea breezes moderating the Mediterranean heat and free-draining stony soils. Superiore requires longer ageing than straight Bolgheri Rosso. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot led, with Cabernet Franc and Syrah in support. Blackcurrant and black cherry with cedar, graphite, tobacco leaf and a dried-herb Mediterranean lift. Full-bodied with firm polished tannin — a Bordeaux frame with a warmth underneath that no Médoc has. Serious and age-worthy. Decant it, and give it several years. Grilled steak, roast lamb, braised short ribs, aged pecorino.
