Fromm's regional Pinot Noir, and a good introduction to a winery founded in 1992 by Swiss vintner Georg Fromm and Hätsch Kalberer, who planted a vineyard of red varieties in the middle of Marlborough's Sauvignon Blanc boom and were largely proved right. Fruit comes from the home Fromm Vineyard on Wairau silt and alluvial gravel, one Waihopai Valley site and three in the Brancott Valley, all certified organic. Almost entirely destemmed while keeping a high proportion of whole berries, wild fermented, three to four weeks on skins, then twelve to eighteen months in French oak with under 10% new. Bright red cherry and raspberry with a savoury, faintly earthy edge and fine-grained tannins. Fresh and supple rather than weighty — this is the drink-sooner wine in the range and none the worse for it. Serve at 16 to 18°C.
