Chardonnay from the Clayvin hillside in the Brancott Valley — the same 1991-planted, north-facing, dense-clay site that made Marlborough Pinot Noir's reputation, and which has set the regional standard for Chardonnay just as long. Around three and a half hectares of the vineyard are given to the variety. Fromm's house approach is austere by design: crushed with stems before pressing, wild fermented bone dry, raised mainly in older Burgundian barrels and allowed full malolactic, so the wood adds texture rather than flavour. Expect understated stone fruit and citrus over lemongrass and a discreet flintstone minerality, tight and focused rather than broad or buttery, with the clay giving it real length. Not a wine that shouts; one that repays attention.
