A limited bottling built around the Abel clone — New Zealand's most storied Pinot Noir selection, reputedly smuggled in from Burgundy and confiscated at Auckland airport by a customs officer named Malcolm Abel, who happened to be a winegrower and propagated it rather than destroying it. It gives darker fruit, more structure and a distinctive savoury depth than the Dijon clones, and growers who have it tend to treat it as something special. Fromm's handling is characteristically restrained: certified organic fruit, wild fermentation, French oak with very little new wood, bottled unfined and unfiltered. Expect concentrated dark cherry and plum with undergrowth, spice and a firm, fine-grained tannic frame. Made in small quantity and not released every year.
