From Marlborough's most famous hillside vineyard. Mike Eaton planted Clayvin in 1991 at the top of the Brancott Valley — the region's first commercial hillside site for Pinot Noir, and the wine that changed what Marlborough Pinot could be. North-facing, sheltered from southerly winds, dense clay soils, high-density planting with diverse clones across many rootstocks in the French manner, now vines of thirty years and more, certified organic. Fromm made the vineyard's reputation in the late 1990s and still lease rows there. Hand-picked, wild fermented, matured in French oak barriques, bottled without fining or filtering. Pristine dark red and blue fruit with rose petal, clove spice and nutty oak over a lifting minerality, structured and persistent but velvety, with fine layered tannins. An expression of place first and a Pinot Noir second.
