A genuine oddity and one of the reasons Fromm matter: cool-climate Malbec from Marlborough, grown on the home Fromm Vineyard where layered silt and alluvial gravel deposited by Wairau River floods give the wines their particular stamp. Georg Fromm and Hätsch Kalberer planted reds here in 1992 when the rest of the region was going to Sauvignon Blanc, and Malbec has been one of the estate's signatures ever since. Deep, saturated colour and very concentrated black fruit — dense without being heavy, with an exotic, spicy flavour profile and a robust tannic structure when young that softens into something quite elegant. Not a complex wine by nature, but complete in its own right. Certified organic. Serve at 16 to 18°C with red meat.
