Malbec

**Malbec** is a red grape from southwest France, historically tied to Cahors, but it found worldwide fame after taking root in Argentina, which is now its spiritual home. **In the glass** — a dense, inky wine bursting with plum, blackberry and violet, often lifted by cocoa and a touch of sweet spice from oak. Tannins are plush and velvety, acidity moderate, and the body full and generous. **Where it grows** — in Cahors it makes a darker, more rustic and tannic wine sometimes called "the black wine." In Argentina's high-altitude Mendoza vineyards it becomes softer, riper and more perfumed, with floral lift from the cool mountain nights. It also appears as a minor blending grape in Bordeaux and grows in Chile and beyond. **At the table** — the classic match is a char-grilled steak. **Cellaring** — approachable young, though top Mendoza and Cahors bottlings can age well for ten years or more.
