The name means "the devil's cellar", and the story behind it is real. In 1883 Don Melchor de Concha y Toro returned from Bordeaux with French vines and techniques, planted them at Pirque outside Santiago, and stored his best bottles behind iron grilles. They kept disappearing. Rather than hire guards, he spread word that the devil lived in the cellar — and the thefts stopped. Villagers reportedly claimed to have seen him down there. Chilean Cabernet from the Central Valley, aged in oak. Blackcurrant and dark plum with cedar, a touch of vanilla and the leafy green-pepper note that is Chilean Cabernet's signature — a varietal marker rather than a fault, and part of what makes the style recognisable. Medium-bodied with smooth well-integrated tannin and a clean finish. Consistent and unpretentious, made for the table rather than the cellar. Grilled beef, burgers, lamb chops, mature cheddar.
