**Chile** is one of the New World's most reliable and export-focused wine countries, blessed with a long, narrow geography squeezed between the Andes and the Pacific that gives it remarkable range and a naturally healthy vineyard environment. It offers strong value across every price tier. **Signature wines** — Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux-style reds are the backbone, but Carménère, a nearly lost Bordeaux grape rediscovered here, has become Chile's signature; Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and Syrah round out the range. **Key regions** — the Central Valley (including Maipo, the Rapel Valley with its renowned Colchagua, and Maule) for reds, cooler coastal zones like Casablanca and San Antonio for whites and Pinot Noir, and the northern Limarí and Elqui valleys. **Good to know** — Chile's isolation, bounded by desert, ocean, mountains, and ice, kept the vine louse phylloxera out, so many vines grow on their own ungrafted roots. Carménère was long mistaken for Merlot until identified in the 1990s.
