Bobbie Burns is one of Rutherglen's long-standing benchmarks, named for the Scottish poet and made by Campbells since the 1960s from the estate's older Shiraz blocks. North-east Victoria's continental heat gives warm-climate depth without the confection that can come with it: blackberry and dark plum with pepper, savoury spice and dried herbs over an earthy undertow, the tannins broad and ripe rather than fine. It is more rustic and less polished than a Barossa equivalent, which is much of its appeal, and it ages with real grace — the fruit receding over a decade while leather and earth come forward. Good with roast and grilled meat, and forgiving at the table.
