The Barkly is Campbells' flagship Durif, made only from the best parcels and only in the years that warrant it, and Rutherglen Durif of this calibre is among the longest-lived reds Australia produces. Campbells have been at Rutherglen since 1870. Near-opaque in youth, inky and tarry, with blackberry and dark plum under black pepper, liquorice and bitter chocolate over a tannic frame that seems excessive until a decade has passed. With real age the colour softens to garnet and the grip resolves into leather, dried fig, chocolate and earth. Wines like this throw a substantial deposit — decant carefully. It belongs with braised and roasted meat, and it is worth the wait.
