Barolo — Nebbiolo grown on the Langhe's marl and sandstone and held to the appellation's long minimum ageing, which is what turns a fiercely tannic young wine into something extraordinary. Pale garnet deepening to orange at the rim, with rose, sour cherry, tar, leather and dried porcini, and the structure that defines the region: searing acidity and abundant, drying tannin on a full body. Austere and unyielding in youth, then remarkable. Decant it, and give it years rather than months.
