Tasting profile
Structure: full-bodied, medium tannin, medium acidity, dry
Ca' dei Frati are best known for Lugana from the shores of Lake Garda, but this wine is a journey back to where the family came from. Felice Dal Cero moved from the Veronese to Lugana di Sirmione in 1939; his son Pietro helped establish the Lugana appellation in 1969. In 2002 the fourth generation bought vineyards at Pian di Castagnè in eastern Valpolicella and dedicated this Amarone to their father. The site sits at 350 metres facing south, on calcareous marl shot through with white and red scaglia, Guyot-trained at low yields. Corvina leads, with Corvinone, Rondinella and a little Croatina; the grapes dry four months in crates before a long maceration, then 24 months in barrique, 12 in steel and at least two years in bottle before release. Rich and powerful: cherries in spirit, dried plum, sweet spice, chocolate and tobacco, with balsamic lift and soft, enveloping tannins. A meditation wine as much as a dinner one.
