Corvinone

**Corvinone** is a red grape from the Veneto region of northeast Italy, long confused with Corvina but now recognised as a distinct variety and an important contributor to the wines of the Verona hills. **In the glass** — it offers red-cherry and dried-fruit character with firm structure, good acidity and moderate tannin, and its large berries partly dry particularly well, concentrating flavour and sweetness. **Where it grows** — it is grown almost exclusively in the Veneto, especially in Valpolicella, where it is blended with Corvina and Rondinella for Valpolicella, Bardolino, and the appassimento wines Amarone and Recioto made from grapes dried after harvest. **At the table** — its blends suit braised meats, game and aged hard cheeses. **Cellaring** — light Valpolicella is best young, but its role in Amarone yields powerful wines that can age for many years.
