Selección Especial is the flagship blend of Abadía Retuerta, the estate around a restored twelfth-century abbey at Sardón de Duero, just outside the Ribera del Duero boundary and bottled as Vino de la Tierra de Castilla y León. Mostly Tempranillo (about 75% in 2016) with Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and small amounts of Merlot and Petit Verdot, chosen by tasting each year and aged about 13 months in French and American oak. Blackberry, plum and black cherry with cedar, pepper and vanilla; full-bodied and polished with well-integrated tannin.
