Bodegas Mauro was founded by Mariano García after nearly three decades as winemaker at Vega Sicilia, and sits just outside the Ribera del Duero boundary — which is why a wine of this quality carries the humbler Vino de la Tierra designation rather than the DO. Tempranillo, here called Tinto Fino, from old vines on the Duero's sandy slopes at Tudela. Dark cherry and plum over cedar, tobacco and a savoury, mineral depth, full-bodied with firm, well-groomed tannin. Serious wine wearing a modest label.
