Mendoza

**Mendoza** lies in the arid foothills of the Andes in western Argentina and is by far the country's most important wine region, responsible for the majority of its production. **Wines & grapes** — Malbec is the signature grape, producing deeply coloured, plush, dark-fruited reds that made Argentina's international name. Cabernet Sauvignon, Bonarda, and Syrah are also widely grown, along with the aromatic white Torrontés. **Character** — Vineyards sit at high altitude, sometimes above 1,000 metres, where intense sunlight and cool nights give ripe fruit with lively acidity and firm colour. The desert climate relies on meltwater irrigation channelled down from the snowcapped Andes. **Good to know** — Higher, cooler sub-zones like the Uco Valley have pushed Mendoza's Malbec toward greater freshness and elegance.
