Tasting profile

Structure: full-bodied, medium tannin, medium acidity, dry

Alma Negra means black soul, named for the extraordinary depth of colour Bonarda gave the first wines Ernesto Catena made under the label. The grape varieties are deliberately not disclosed — that is the entire premise. Catena wanted a wine about which little was known, so that it could be judged solely on how the taster perceived it; the range launched in 2006 as Misterio, with a mask on the label standing for the hidden identity. In practice these are dark, fruit-driven Mendoza reds. Dark plum and blackberry with violet, warm spice, dark chocolate and a velvety texture. Full-bodied with soft, ripe tannin and a long finish. The blank variety field on this wine is not missing data — it is the label doing what it was designed to do.
