**Lombardy** is a large, wealthy region in northern Italy centred on Milan, stretching from the Alps to the Po plain. It is home to some of Italy's most prestigious sparkling wine and a distinctive mountain red. **Wines & grapes** — Franciacorta, made by the traditional bottle-fermented method from Chardonnay and Pinot Nero, is the flagship and rivals fine Champagne. Valtellina in the Alpine north grows Nebbiolo (locally Chiavennasca), while Oltrepò Pavese produces a broad range of still and sparkling wines. **Character** — Cool, varied terrain gives elegant, high-acid sparkling wines and, in Valtellina, lighter, aromatic, high-altitude Nebbiolo grown on steep terraces. **Good to know** — Sforzato di Valtellina is a powerful dry red made from dried grapes, like a Nebbiolo take on Amarone.
